Here are some tips and tricks that I find useful when painting in watercolour. I hope you find them useful.

Some of my colour influence comes from Charles Reid (American artist) and Shirley Trevena (British Artist)...her work is in watercolour and she does 90% still life work and it’s very unusual.

I picked up a very good tip from Charles Reid, if you are working with pans of colour rather than tubes, spray them with water about a half hour before starting to work so they get nice and “goopy” to release the pigment and you don’t have to really dig into the paint and rub at it. It really works.

ALWAYS keep your paints clean. ALWAYS keep your water clean, change it regularly. Sounds boring, I know but it is the essence of beautiful watercolours.

Try mixing paint on the paper rather than on your palette.

I like to spray my paper and apply paint to damp paper, working wet into wet.
